When you have your emulator up and running with the ROM loaded, look for a cheats option in the drop-down menu. It may be labeled as cheats, cheat codes, or something similar. A pop-up window will appear, similar to the image below.
This is where the excitement begins. Select the appropriate add button for the type of code you want to use, such as GameShark. An untitled blank code will appear on the left. You can give it a name if you like. Then, with the code highlighted, enter it in the text box on the right and click add.
Once you’ve done this, the code will be visible on the left side of the screen when you open the dropdown menu. Now, make sure the box on the left is highlighted and the code is almost applied.
With your codes ready to go, create a new save file and reset the game. Not all emulators require this step, but it’s a good habit to follow. Congratulations! You now have a functioning code!
